In the United States , for example, the people identified as African Americans do not share a common set of physical characteristics. There is a greater range of skin colours, hair colours and textures, facial features, body sizes, and other physical traits in this category than in any other human aggregate identified as a single race. Features of African Americans vary from light skins, blue or gray eyes, and blond hair to dark skins, black eyes, and crinkly hair and include every range and combination of characteristics in between. All this gives clear evidence of the socially arbitrary nature of race categories in North America. Since World War II , travel and immigration have greatly increased the contact of Western peoples with a wide variety of peoples throughout the world.

Facial identification is becoming even more relevant with increasing crime rates, problems with access control and terrorist attacks. To make facial identification more accurate, an in depth knowledge of the common and rare facial characteristics seen in various populations is needed. This will be advantageous when comparing facial photographs.
However the more attractive a face is, regardless of ethnicity, the less the variations from the mask seem to occur. That is, in the attractive face from any ethnic group the correlation with the mask is extremely high. It is somewhat artificial to put people into categories, since even people placed in the same category can have significant variations. This is the case with human attractiveness and geographic races ethnic groups. There are nine geographic races, each with particular genetic similarities.
