I appreciate that a second paragraph was added, but it's unsourced and it conflicts some with my understanding of the term, so I'd like to see a valid reference if it's to be included. Here's the text I removed:. The so-called "anal" stage of infantile development denoted and named from discovering and playing with the infant's own feces is also characterized by learning that screaming and yelling causes a parental response. This learned cause and effect carried on later in life was named anal-retentive - or to stay in the retain anal developmental stage. Calling anal retentive anything to do with constipation is a modern misnomer.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that the expansion of PAPD to include content related to negative moods and non-specific personality pathology compromised its discriminant validity. Furthermore, a conjoint factor analysis yielded a strong first factor moodiness which appeared less specific to passive aggressive behavior than three other factors irresponsibility, inadequacy and contempt. We conclude that future research on this potentially important clinical construct should focus on core passive aggressive features and abandon the negativistic content that has been added to it in successive editions of the DSM. Clinicians and clinical theorists seem to continue to value the concept.
Sigmund Freud 6 May — 23 September an Austrian neurologist and founding father of psychoanalysis is regarded as one of the most influential and controversial minds of the 20 th century. His life work gave us a new understanding of human behavior and mental illness and such was his influence that today his ideas are interwoven into our everyday language as we refer to ego, defensiveness, repression, denial, mommy and daddy issues, death wish, phallic symbols, someone being passive-aggressive or anal retentive or simply when we refer to Freudian slips of the tongue or sibling rivalry. Freud was the inventor of a new mode of dealing with the unconscious, the psychoanalytic situation, with his theory providing the bases for modern depth psychology and psychotherapy. He developed a theory of how the mind is organized and operates internally and is perhaps best known for his mapping of the unconscious, his creation of a structural model of the mind the id, ego and superego and his theories of libido the sexualized life instinct , Thantaos the death instinct , dream analysis, Oedipus complex and his charting of the sequence of psychological growth from infancy to mature adulthood. His therapeutic techniques introduced the analytical hour, talk therapy, free association, complexes, the mechanisms of repression and transference.
